FALs with a “G” prefixed serial number were
originally acquired by the West German Government for the Bundeswehr as the
Gewehr I Rifle. In 1959, West
Germany adopted the G3 rifle and sold an estimated 100,000 GI rifles as
surplus. Parker-Hale Ltd. in Great Britain converted] a number of these rifles
to semiautomatic only by removing the safety sear and welding up the selector
lever’s full auto notch. Browning Arms Company of the United States obtained
approval from the BATF to import these rifles. Those “G” prefixed rifles that
are legally in the[ United States have serial numbers within the ranges listed
below. Beware of illegal imports from other countries. These are subject to
confiscation as illegal machine guns and owners could be liable to federal
prosecution.
